Cappadocia's Rock-Cut Churches & Monasteries

Nowhere else did Christians build quite like this. In Cappadocia, monks and villagers carved churches, chapels and whole monasteries out of the soft volcanic rock, then covered the walls with paintings of the life of Christ. A thousand years later, many of those frescoes still glow in the half-light.

1Göreme Open-Air MuseumGöreme, Nevşehir

A whole monastic valley carved into the rock, Göreme is the heart of Cappadocia's Christian story and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Step from bright sunshine into chapel after chapel, each painted with saints and Gospel scenes. Go early, before the crowds, and you may have them almost to yourself.

Brightly coloured frescoes under the domes of the Dark Church
2Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise)Göreme, Nevşehir

Its tiny windows let in so little light that the Dark Church kept its paintings almost untouched by time. The result is the most vivid set of frescoes in Göreme, with deep blues and rich reds telling the life of Christ scene by scene.

Deep blue frescoes of biblical scenes in Tokalı Church
3Tokalı Church (Church of the Buckle)Göreme, Nevşehir

The largest church in Göreme is also one of its most breathtaking. Tokalı's walls are painted in a deep, luminous blue, and a long cycle of scenes tells the life of Christ like a picture book. Many travellers name it the highlight of their visit to Cappadocia.

4Ihlara Valley ChurchesAksaray

Follow a stream through a green canyon, its cliffs dotted with the doorways of hermit cells and painted churches. Ihlara is a walk and a pilgrimage at once. Climb a few steps from the path into a chapel that has watched over the valley for a thousand years, then carry on to a riverside tea garden.

Carved pillars and arches inside the rock-cut cathedral of Selime
5Selime CathedralSelime, Aksaray

At the northern end of Ihlara Valley, a whole monastery was hollowed out of a great rock. Its kitchens, halls and towering nave make Selime the largest rock-cut religious complex in Cappadocia. Explore its cool chambers, then take in the wide view over the valley.

Fresco of the Virgin and Child with saints at Gümüşler Monastery
6Gümüşler MonasteryNiğde

Few visitors make it to Gümüşler, and those who do are richly rewarded. This rock-cut monastery hides a courtyard, a church and some of the best-preserved frescoes in the region, including a beautiful Virgin and Child. It is a perfect choice for travellers who prefer their history quiet.

Cave dwellings carved into the cliffs of Zelve
7Zelve Open-Air MuseumNear Avanos, Nevşehir

Zelve was a living village carved into the cliffs, where churches stood beside homes, mills and stables. People lived here until the 1950s, when erosion made it unsafe. Wander its three valleys and you see how faith and everyday life shared the same rock for centuries.
